Designed in Devon/PM-P - Extended Play
Designed in Devon and Plymouth Media-Partnership are presenting the Extended Play event at Devonport Guildhall, on Friday 6th August from 6:30pm.
Extended Play is positioned as Plymouth’s (if not the Southwest’s) first Games Design event and will showcase an emerging industry happening right here in Plymouth!
Living in these convergent times, the Games Industry interacts with all the creative industries including web, mobile, film, sound and animation - creating virtual and interactive experiences that go far beyond the console.
We think it’s time to celebrate that and would love you to come along and help us do so!
We have assembled an exclusive panel of experts from across the UK, asking them to investigate how Plymouth, Devon and the wider Southwest, can take advantage of an Industry very much on the rise. In addition they will look at how our creative businesses can benefit from building a community that is alive and very much kicking!
With supporters now including SW Design Forum, Plymouth CC, City Development Company, University of Plymouth, Plymouth College of Art, Tamar Science Park, Formation Zone, RIO, Francis Clark and of course our creative community, this event is positioning itself to become a regular spot in the Region’s creative diary. We aim to take Extended Play to a City-wide two day festival in 2011 and your support in attendance will be part of that process!
If you will be making it along to Extended Play, and if you haven’t done so already, we are asking that you sign up to ensure catering is adequate for our numbers. To manage this registration process, we are using EventBrite - http://explay.eventbrite.com
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly, chair@designedindevon.co.uk or check out the website at http://www.explay.co.uk
Research + Design win Highly Commended category in national award
Architecture and design office Research + Design has won the Highly Commended category for CIAT’s national award The Alan King Award 2009 for their first completed project, an innovative timber clad residential extension located in the Barbican area of Plymouth. A plaque commemorating the award is scheduled to be fitted to the building in a ceremony on site in the Barbican this Friday 9th of July at 12:30. CIAT President Barry Le Beuvant PCIAT will be attending the ceremony along with the judging committee and various representatives from CIAT, Research + Design and the local contracting firm responsible for the build, Milehouse Construction.
The award demonstrates achievement in technical excellence in design and construction for projects valued at £500,000 and under. The judging panel noted:
The integration of the extension within the existing property was impressive as well as Research + Design’s attention to detail.
The project features a sunroom that can be configured in a variety of ways utilizing custom panels that disappear into wall recesses. The space can also accommodate yoga and study when closed or entertaining when open or as a children’s play area when partially closed.
Director of Research + Design Robert Bedner commended the team for the project and high level of craftsmanship that had been achieved by the builders Milehouse Construction. Joinery and timber detailing utilising Siberian Larch also played a major role in the project including larch doors, window sills and stair handrails - all expertly crafted by local joinery firm Watson and Gardiner.

December 2008: Formation Zone celebrates its first anniversary
An important business incubator and support unit for Plymouth’s creative sector has celebrated its first anniversary. Formation Zone, based in the University of Plymouth’s Roland Levinsky Building, provides incubator and pre-incubator space for new and developing creative businesses. It is an integral part of the work that is taking place in the South West to increase the number of businesses in this sector, which is worth £9.3 billion to the regional economy.
It opened a year ago and the first businesses moved in in February. Now, Formation Zone is two-thirds full and has supported 12 businesses in that time. “Formation Zone has already supported enterprises working in many different areas of the creative industries including film, architecture, digital media, theatre, photography, music, graphic design and marketing. We are really making headway with our support for the creative industries and that will have a positive effect on the creative economy of Plymouth and surrounding areas,” said Formation Zone Programme Manager Eleanor Butland.
“One of the key successes of this first year has been the value of offering support to individuals that are just at the very first stages of developing a business idea. Before they are at a stage to hire a work station in Formation Zone, we work closely together to support the development of their plans and guide them through researching their market and testing their product or service. We have had great results so far and will be extending this service further in 2009.”
Professor Maureen Neal, Deputy Vice Chancellor, opening the event
In 2009, the number of clients are set to grow and Formation Zone’s virtual network will also expand with the addition of a Connect members’ area to the website and a Facebook group to strengthen the creative community that is forming. Key events such as the regular One Stop Ideas Shop meetings will continue, with meetings taking place on the second Monday of every month, including 12 January, 9 February and 9 March. These see experts from organisations including the Tamar Science Park, Business Link, the university, a patent attorney and the Patent Library giving one to one advice to people with a business idea. And Formation Zone’s annual industry symposium will also be held again, with organisers expecting an increase on the 80 delegates that attended this year’s event, in October, to discuss current issues in the industry.

IT and digital media recruitment company Aardvark moved into Formation Zone in September. Director Sarah Symonds said: “Previously, I was working from home and rather isolated from the facilities and people that could help me in my business. Working at the Formation Zone allows you to be in a ‘networking environment’ and has allowed me to use the facilities and workshops available that are relevant to my business. The office is also in a fantastic location in the centre of town with great views from huge windows looking out over Plymouth, so you actually enjoy working from this location.”
Fuel Communications, who offer marketing and PR, graphic and web design, sales consultancy and media planning, moved into Formation Zone in April. Director Martyn King said: “Running our business from such a landmark building has given a real boost to our brand. We have had three national organisations in who have been absolutely blown away by the facilities. In each case this has helped us in the sense that we look ‘big’ enough to do the work.”
